The Endocannabinoid System

Undoubtedly CBD has become a cure-all substance in no time.  It offers a wide range of health benefits because of its remarkable therapeutic properties. Cannabidiol is one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids that is extracted from Cannabis Sativa or Industrial hemp.  It is safe and does not cause any severe side effects. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD is non-intoxicating and completely non-addictive.   CBD has known to reduce pain, inflammation, and overall discomfort produced by several types of health issues. Research has shown that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system which is composed of three main constituents that are:

Endocannabinoid Receptors

Two primary and cannabinoid receptors present all across the body are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and the central nervous system, whereas CB2 is more abundant in the immune system, such as macrophages and neutrophils.

Endogenous Cannabinoids

The lipid membranes of our cells produce endogenous cannabinoid molecules such as anandamide and 2-AG.  These endocannabinoids interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors to carry out various physiological functions.

How CBD Interacts With ECS

Research has shown that CBD may not be able to interact with the endocannabinoid receptors directly; it can significantly influence the activity of the endogenous cannabinoids. It boosts their uptake by the ECS receptors and reduces the possibility of their degradation. The endocannabinoids are fated to degrade as soon as their job is done, but adequate CBD dose in the blood can reduce the chances so that they can be reused when required. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating several physiological functions which is why CBD can help with health conditions such as:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Arthritis

Endocannabinoid Deficiency

Preliminary research has shown that deficiency of endocannabinoids could be a potential reason for some complicated health issues such as fibromyalgia and migraine. Adequate CBD dose may help in reducing the symptoms of these unexplained medical conditions.
